Large Intestine 9

LI9 or “Shanglian" in Chinese is known as “Upper Ridge” in English. This acupoint is positioned along the dorsal radial side of the forearm with the elbow flexed, specifically on the line connecting LI 5 and LI 11, situated 3 cun below the transverse cubital crease.

This acupuncture point serves various clinical purposes, including but not limited to:

  • Addressing issues related to the Stomach (ST), Large Intestine (LI), and Small Intestine (SI) organs through their interconnections:

    • SI: Linked with LI 8 & ST 39

    • LI: Corresponds with LI 9 & ST 37

    • ST: Associated with LI 10 & ST 36

  • Providing localized relief for shoulder, elbow, and arm discomfort.

  • Resolving stagnation in the large intestine, thereby easing symptoms like abdominal pain and difficult urination.

  • Alleviating limb numbness, especially in the upper extremities, aiding in stroke rehabilitation.

While a single acupuncture point typically doesn't comprehensively address Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns, LI 9 stands out as a promising addition to acupuncture protocols for patients exhibiting symptoms of Large Intestine Damp Heat.

In conjunction with a well-structured acupuncture treatment plan, LI 9 holds potential in managing conditions such as abdominal pain, shoulder discomfort, tennis elbow, and urinary disorders (Lin Disease).
