Research has shown that high blood pressure is not only a main cause of death in the world, but is also a major factor linked to approximately 54% of strokes, and 47% of heart disease and heart attacks worldwide.

Many people who are older than 40 years of age are at risk, especially those who have poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, and a lack of exercise. A diet high in unrefined carbs, and devoid of veggies and fruits which provide much-needed vitamins and minerals, would also put you at risk of developing high blood pressure.

If you are very overweight or obese, you would also be at risk of hypertension. The cardiovascular system is put under strain when you are obese, and the heart has to work harder to pump the blood to all parts of the body. This pushes the blood pressure up to get the job done.

Extensive research has also revealed that those at the highest risk of developing high blood pressure, are people who constantly suffer from stress and anxiety. If you find it difficult to relax, get irritated easily, and are always impatient, these may be clues from your body that your stress and anxiety levels may be abnormally high.

Although hypertension itself is known as the silent killer because there are no actual symptoms, take time to examine clues presented by your body such as tension headaches, shortness of breath if you are obese, and low-immunity issues making you prone to infections. It may be due to hypertension.

Stress and anxiety have its roots in the mind. Untreated, they are a catalyst for high blood pressure which has the potential to cause serious damage to your heart, a stroke because of weakened arteries and poor blood flow to the brain, and can also cause organ damage.
