Series hypnosis for chronic pain: Article 3 of 3 - Bioenergetics

About bioenergetics.

Bioenergetics is the study of energy in living things. It is a form of psychodynamic and psychotherapy (or hypnotherapy) that combines working with the body and mind to help people resolve emotional problems, which may be negatively affecting the enjoyment of physical life.

Bioenergetics psychotherapists maintain that there is a strong connection between mind and body. Research has indicated that what affects the body, affects the mind and vice versa. This proves that the mental defences one might use to cope with pain or stress are anchored in the body as well as the mind. The patterns are understood by the bioenergetics therapists, which gives credence to the body and mind connection.

The combination of bioenergetics and hypnotherapy, allows the therapist to access the subconscious mind, and help patients to understand how repressed feelings of the past can hinder their lives in the present. The release and elimination of repressed feelings can add to living healthy, supportive lives in more satisfying ways.

What is psychodynamic psychology?

Psychodynamic is a form of bioenergetics, and is an approach to psychology that focuses on the study of the mental forces which influence human behaviour, feelings, emotions, and the ability to cope in chronic situations. Psychodynamic therapy therefore, is aimed at reducing symptoms of chronic pain, releasing repressed feelings of trauma, and combatting serious negativity.

Combined with hypnotherapy, the psychodynamic therapist can help people to speak freely about their desires, emotions and fears. According to psychodynamic research and theory, most harmful thoughts originate in the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is able to access the subconscious mind, and help deal with thoughts and fears which contribute to destructive behaviour patterns.

Psychodynamic therapy has been extremely instrumental in helping people understand how the unconscious mind works, and how it may potentially impair behaviour patterns.

Individual therapy.

This is a joint process between a therapist and a person in therapy. Individual therapy can include hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, counselling, and talk therapy. Talk therapy is known as cognitive behavioural therapy or CBT. This is one of the most effective types of therapy which helps people understand and accept the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviour patterns. The therapist can help you to replace negative thinking patterns with positive, pro-active patterns. The belief and science behind CBT is the conviction that healthy thoughts often promote positive feelings and productive actions.

Because therapists using CBT often allow people to do most of the talking, at first it may be difficult for folk to talk about past trauma, or current issues. The therapy could stir up strong emotions which leave you upset or sad. However, a competent therapist will be able to help people to rebuild mental strength and confidence as the therapy sessions progress.

Depending on the needs of the person concerned, individual therapy may be of short or long duration. Some concerns can be solved over a short period of time, while other more complex or chronic issues, may take much longer to be overcome.

The effectiveness of individual therapy.

Therapy cannot always cure a condition, but it can help to develop coping skills when it comes to reducing stress and anxiety caused by chronic pain, whether it be emotional or physical. The benefits of psychodynamic therapy and psychotherapy cannot be understated.

Research has indicated that therapy has resulted in the reduction of anxiety and stress, and greatly improved the management of chronic pain conditions.

The successes of therapy treatments are in keeping with the bioenergetics premise that body and mind are connected, and need to work together to solve physical and mental issues, which may have been tearing you apart.
