Does Online Hypnotherapy Work?
Yes. Research comparing hypnotherapy delivered by video with face-to-face treatment found no statistically significant difference in outcomes. Hypnosis relies on focused attention and the therapeutic relationship, not physical proximity, and both translate well to a live video session. Matthew Tweedie provides online clinical hypnotherapy from Adelaide to clients across Australia and worldwide.
What does the research say about online hypnotherapy?
The most direct evidence comes from the University of Manchester, home to one of the world's most established clinical hypnotherapy programs. Researchers there delivered gut-directed hypnotherapy to IBS patients over Skype and compared the results against face-to-face treatment. 65 percent of patients responded to video-delivered hypnotherapy, with all other measured outcomes improving significantly, compared with 76 percent for in-person treatment, and when the researchers ran the statistical comparison, the apparent difference between the two delivery methods did not reach significance.
Two details from that study matter for anyone weighing up online sessions. First, these were patients with severe, treatment-resistant symptoms, not easy cases. Second, 71 percent of the people treated by video would have been unable to access treatment at all without the online option. For most of them the real comparison was never online versus in-person. It was online versus nothing.
The broader picture supports the same conclusion. A review by the US Department of Veterans Affairs found preliminary research supports hypnosis delivered through telehealth as well-received and effective, and self-guided digital hypnotherapy programs have been shown in a large randomised controlled trial to be non-inferior to face-to-face delivered sessions.
Why does hypnotherapy translate so well to video?
Hypnosis is not something done to you. It is a state of focused, absorbed attention that you produce yourself, with the therapist guiding the process through voice. That is why it works over a screen. The essential ingredients are a clear voice, your attention, and a working relationship with your therapist, and all three are fully present on a video call.
Many clients actually find it easier to relax at home. There is no unfamiliar clinic room, no travel, and no transition back into traffic afterwards. You finish the session already in your own space, which suits the deeply relaxed state hypnotherapy produces.
Is online hypnotherapy right for every issue?
Most of the issues I work with respond well online, including anxiety, stress, sleep difficulties, phobias, confidence, habit change and overthinking. The methods are the same ones used in the clinic room: clinical hypnotherapy, NLP, Timeline Therapy and Resource Therapy, adapted only in small practical ways for video.
A small number of situations are better suited to in-person work or need medical involvement first. If your situation involves significant trauma, a diagnosed psychiatric condition, or symptoms that have not been medically assessed, we discuss that openly before booking so you end up with the right kind of care, whether that is with me or elsewhere.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach and not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment. If you are experiencing symptoms that have not been assessed by a doctor, or you are in crisis, please speak with your GP or call Lifeline on 13 11 14. For online sessions, I ask all new clients to complete the same intake process as in-person clients so any medical considerations are identified before we begin.

What do I need for an online session?
Three things: a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted for the session length, a device with a camera and stable internet, and headphones if possible, since they improve audio quality and help you stay absorbed. A comfortable chair or recliner beats lying on a bed, where people tend to drift toward sleep rather than focused relaxation.
Sessions run on a standard video platform with the link sent when you book. Session times are confirmed in your local time zone, wherever you are in the world.
How is an online session different from visiting the clinic?
Structurally, it is the same session. We talk through what has been happening, clarify what you want to change, and then move into the hypnotherapy work itself. The main practical difference is the check-in at the start of hypnosis: online, I watch and listen a little more actively for the signs of absorption I would normally read in the room, and clients are often surprised how quickly the screen disappears from their awareness once the process begins.
Afterwards, instead of walking out to a car park, you are already home. Many clients use the minutes after an online session to journal or simply sit with the shift, which is a genuine advantage of the format.
How many sessions does online hypnotherapy take?
The same as in-person work, because the delivery method does not change the approach. Some issues shift noticeably within a few sessions, others benefit from a structured program over weeks or months. Many clients notice meaningful progress early, often within the first handful of sessions. We map out a realistic expectation in your first appointment based on your specific situation.
“I’d convinced myself that real change only happened face-to-face, so I kept delaying hypnotherapy around my work schedule. When I finally tried the online sessions, I was surprised by how quickly I relaxed within minutes I’d forgotten I was staring at a screen. By the third session, the usual after-work urge to drink had faded from a daily battle into something I simply didn’t think about anymore. It felt strange to notice the absence of craving more than the craving itself. I only wish I hadn’t waited so long to try it from home.”

FAQ
Does online hypnotherapy work as well as in-person hypnotherapy?
Research suggests yes for most people. A University of Manchester study comparing video-delivered hypnotherapy with face-to-face treatment found no statistically significant difference in outcomes, even among patients with severe symptoms. The therapeutic ingredients of hypnosis, focused attention and a guiding voice, transfer fully to a live video session.
Can you actually be hypnotised over a video call?
Yes. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention you generate yourself with the therapist's guidance, not something transmitted physically. As long as you can see and hear your therapist clearly, the process works the same way it does in a clinic room, and many people find it easier to relax in their own home.
Is online hypnotherapy safe?
For most people, yes, provided it is delivered by a qualified practitioner with a proper intake process. I screen all new online clients the same way as in-person clients, so any situation needing medical involvement or in-person care is identified before we start.
What conditions can online hypnotherapy help with?
The same range as in-person work, including anxiety, stress, sleep difficulties, phobias, confidence, habit change and overthinking. A first conversation establishes whether your specific situation suits online delivery.
Do I need any special equipment for an online hypnotherapy session?
Just a device with a camera, stable internet, a quiet private space, and ideally headphones. A comfortable chair works better than lying down.
What happens if the internet drops out during hypnosis?
Nothing harmful. You would simply return to normal awareness on your own, the same way you would if a recording stopped. We reconnect and continue. In years of online work this is rare and never dangerous, because hypnosis is a natural state you can leave at any time.
Can I do online hypnotherapy from outside Australia?
Yes. I work with clients internationally, with session times confirmed in your local time zone. Online delivery is a core part of my practice, not a substitute for the real thing.
Is online hypnotherapy cheaper than in-person sessions?
Fees are the same, because the session, preparation and approach are identical. What you save is travel time and the logistics of getting to a clinic.
How do I know if I am hypnotisable enough for it to work online?
Most people can experience useful hypnosis, and hypnotisability does not change with the delivery method. If you can become absorbed in a film or a book, you have the basic capacity the process uses.
Will online sessions work if I have never done hypnotherapy before?
Yes. First-timers do just as well online. Your first session includes a full explanation of what hypnosis is and is not, and the process is paced to you.
