Hypnotherapy for Health Anxiety in Adelaide

Can hypnotherapy help with health anxiety? Yes. Health anxiety is an anxiety response that keeps your mind scanning for signs of illness, and hypnotherapy works with the subconscious where that fear is triggered, calming the threat response and breaking the checking and reassurance cycle. In Adelaide and online, Matthew Tweedie uses hypnotherapy and NLP to ease health anxiety at the root.

What is health anxiety?

Health anxiety is the persistent fear that you have, or are about to develop, a serious illness, even when tests come back clear and doctors reassure you. A normal body sensation, a twinge, a skipped heartbeat, a headache, gets read as a sign of something terrible, which sets off a cycle: checking your body, googling symptoms, seeking reassurance, feeling better briefly, then anxious again. It can quietly take over your days. And it is more common than people think. An Australian study found about 5.7% of people experience health anxiety in their lifetime, often peaking in middle age, and rates have risen sharply over the past thirty years, driven partly by symptom-googling, sometimes called Dr Google. If this is you, you are not being dramatic or weak. It is a recognised, treatable anxiety condition.

Why reassurance never lasts

If you have health anxiety, you already know the relief of a clear test result rarely sticks. Within days, sometimes hours, the worry creeps back and the checking starts again. That is because the problem is not a lack of information, it is the anxiety response itself. Every check, every search, every request for reassurance gives a brief hit of calm that quietly teaches your brain the threat was real, so the urge to check returns stronger. Breaking that loop, rather than chasing one more reassurance, is what actually settles health anxiety.

How does hypnotherapy help with health anxiety?

Logic and clear scans do not calm health anxiety, because the fear is triggered below conscious thought, in the subconscious and the nervous system. Hypnotherapy works at that level. In a relaxed, focused state, Matthew helps calm the underlying threat response, ease the hypervigilance that makes you notice every body sensation, and loosen the checking and reassurance habit. Using hypnotherapy with NLP, the goal is a nervous system that no longer treats every sensation as an emergency, so you can live in your body without fear running the show.

Important: hypnotherapy for health anxiety is not a substitute for medical care. Always have new, changing or concerning physical symptoms checked by your GP. This work addresses the anxiety, not undiagnosed physical illness, and is designed to sit alongside your medical care, never to replace it.

Is hypnotherapy for health anxiety evidence-based?

Health anxiety sits within the anxiety disorders, and research shows hypnotherapy is effective for anxiety. One meta-analysis found people treated with hypnosis improved more than about 79% of those who were not, and hypnosis combined with approaches like CBT outperforms those approaches on their own. CBT is well established for health anxiety, and hypnotherapy complements it by calming the nervous system and reducing the fear response that keeps the cycle running.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people notice a shift within a few sessions, with meaningful change usually over three to six. How long depends on how long the anxiety has been running and how deep the checking habit has become. You will get a clear sense in your first session.

What happens in a session?

It is calm and collaborative. We start by talking through how health anxiety shows up for you, the sensations you fixate on and the checking patterns you have built. Then Matthew guides you into a relaxed, focused state to settle the threat response and rehearse a calmer relationship with your body. You stay aware and in control throughout.

Is it right for me?

If you find yourself googling symptoms, checking your body, seeking reassurance, fearing the worst over normal sensations, or feeling unable to relax even after clear results, and you are ready for that to ease, this is worth exploring.

The hypnosis work has been very successful. It helped me release a significant emotional weight I had been carrying for a long time and shift patterns that traditional talk-based approaches hadn’t fully resolved. I’ve noticed a real change in how I respond to stress, with more clarity, calm, and self-trust, and a greater ability to move forward without being pulled back by old reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy really help with health anxiety?  Yes. Health anxiety is an anxiety response, and hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level where that fear is triggered, calming the threat response and easing the checking and reassurance cycle. Research shows hypnotherapy is effective for anxiety, and most people notice a shift within a few sessions.

Is health anxiety the same as hypochondria?  Effectively yes. Hypochondria is the older term, and in the current diagnostic manual it is called illness anxiety disorder. Both describe the same thing: excessive fear of having a serious illness despite reassurance.

Why doesn't a clear test result reassure me for long?  Because the relief from reassurance fades fast and quietly teaches your brain the threat was real, so the urge to check returns. The fix is calming the anxiety response itself, not chasing one more reassurance.

Will this stop me getting real symptoms checked?  No, and it should not. Always have new or concerning physical symptoms checked by your GP. This work eases the anxiety so you can make calm, sensible decisions about your health rather than fearful ones.

How quickly does it work?  Many people feel a shift within a few sessions, with meaningful change typically over three to six, depending on how long the anxiety and checking habits have been in place.

Can we do sessions online?  Yes, in person at the Evandale rooms or online across Australia, and it is equally effective either way.

Is it safe, and safe with medication?  Yes, when provided by a qualified practitioner. It is drug-free and non-invasive, you stay in control throughout, and it works alongside any prescribed medication and your medical care. Matthew will never ask you to change medication.

What if my health anxiety started after a real illness or scare?  That is very common, and it does not make it harder to treat. The work simply helps your nervous system update, so a past scare no longer keeps the alarm switched on.

Do I lose control under hypnosis?  No. You are aware the whole time and cannot be made to do anything against your will. It is a focused, relaxed state, not sleep or mind control.
