Hypnotherapy for Stress and Burnout in Adelaide

Hypnotherapy for Trauma and PTSD in Adelaide

Can hypnotherapy help with trauma and PTSD? Yes. Hypnotherapy and related techniques work gently with the nervous system to reduce the emotional charge trauma leaves in the body, calm the symptoms, and help you feel safe again, without forcing you to relive what happened. In Adelaide and online, Matthew Tweedie uses clinical hypnotherapy, NLP, Timeline Therapy and Resource Therapy to help people move forward at their own pace.

Why does trauma linger?

Trauma is not weakness, and it is not something you should simply be over by now. When something overwhelming happens, the nervous system can get stuck in survival mode long after the event has passed. The body stays braced, the mind stays alert for danger, and reminders can trigger the same flood of fear, tension or numbness as if it were happening again. This is not a flaw in you, it is your nervous system doing its best to protect you, just at the wrong times. And it is common. Most Australians, up to 75%, experience a traumatic event at some point, and around one in nine will experience PTSD in their lifetime. You are not alone, and you are not beyond help.

How does hypnotherapy help with trauma?

It works with the nervous system, where trauma actually lives, rather than only talking about it. In a calm, focused state, we help your system come out of survival mode and feel safe again, and gently reduce the emotional charge that memories and triggers carry, so they lose their grip. Importantly, this is not about reliving or digging up the past. Matthew works gently and at your pace, using hypnotherapy alongside NLP, Timeline Therapy and Resource Therapy, approaches designed to resolve the impact of trauma without re-traumatising you.

Is hypnotherapy for trauma evidence-based?

Yes. A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Traumatic Stress found that hypnotherapy had a positive effect on PTSD symptoms across every study reviewed, with a large overall effect. Research also shows that people who have experienced trauma often respond especially well to hypnotic approaches, and that hypnotherapy can ease the intrusive memories, avoidance and hyperarousal that define post-traumatic stress. It works by calming the nervous system and helping the brain update its response to what is now a past event.

Will I have to relive what happened?

No. This is one of the most important things to understand, and one of the most common fears. You do not have to relive or even describe your trauma in detail for this work to help. Matthew uses gentle, often content-free techniques, meaning you do not need to recount the story, and you stay in control the entire time. The goal is relief and safety, never re-traumatisation.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies more than with simpler issues, because trauma is personal and layered. Some people feel significant relief in a handful of sessions, while complex or long-standing trauma usually takes longer and a gentler pace. Matthew will talk through a realistic picture with you early on, and never rush you.

What happens in a session?

It is calm, safe and led at your pace. We start by talking through what you want to feel and be able to do, sharing only what you are comfortable sharing. Then Matthew guides you into a relaxed, focused state and uses gentle techniques to settle the nervous system and ease the charge around the trauma. You stay aware and in control throughout.

Is it right for me?

If past events still affect your sleep, mood, relationships, body or sense of safety, and you want to move forward without years of reliving it, this is worth exploring. Hypnotherapy can also work alongside a psychologist, GP or mental health plan as part of your wider support.

If you are in immediate distress or struggling to stay safe, please reach out to your GP or call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Hypnotherapy is not a crisis service. For complex or severe PTSD, Matthew is glad to work as part of a team alongside your doctor or psychologist.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy really help with trauma and PTSD?  Yes. It works with the nervous system to reduce the emotional charge trauma leaves behind and calm the symptoms. A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Traumatic Stress found hypnotherapy had a positive effect on PTSD symptoms across every study reviewed.

Will I have to relive or describe my trauma?  No. You do not need to relive or even describe the details for this work to help. Matthew uses gentle, often content-free techniques, and you stay in control the whole time. The goal is relief, not re-traumatisation.

Is it safe for trauma?  Yes, when provided by a qualified practitioner working gently and at your pace. Matthew holds a Masters in Hypno-Psychotherapy and uses trauma-sensitive approaches. For severe or complex PTSD, he is happy to work alongside your GP or psychologist.

How is it different from talk therapy or EMDR?  Talk therapy works mainly with the conscious mind, and EMDR with reprocessing memory. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious and nervous system to reduce the charge trauma holds. It can complement these approaches rather than replace them.

How quickly does it work?  Some people feel real relief within a few sessions, while complex or long-standing trauma takes longer and a gentler pace. Matthew will give you a realistic picture early on.

Can we do sessions online?  Yes, in person at the Evandale rooms or online across Australia. Many people actually feel safer doing this work from their own space.

Will it work alongside my medication or my psychologist?  Yes. Hypnotherapy works alongside medication and other therapy, not instead of it. Matthew will never ask you to change medication, which is a conversation for your doctor.

What if my trauma is from childhood or happened long ago?  It can still help. The nervous system holds the pattern regardless of when the event happened, and that pattern can be gently updated at any age.

What if I do not remember everything clearly?  That is completely fine. This work does not depend on recovering memories, and Matthew will never try to dig up or implant them. The focus is on how your system responds now, not on reconstructing the past.

Do I lose control under hypnosis?  No. You are aware the whole time and cannot be made to do or say anything against your will. With trauma especially, staying in control is central to how the work is done.
