Overcome ADHD and Unlock Your Full Potential with NLP, Hypnosis, and Time Line Therapy®

Can hypnotherapy help with ADHD? It cannot treat ADHD itself, and it is not a substitute for medical care. What it can do, alongside proper diagnosis and treatment, is support some of the things that often travel with ADHD: stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep difficulties and shaky confidence. Matthew Tweedie offers this supportive work in Adelaide and online.

Important: ADHD is a recognised neurodevelopmental condition that should be diagnosed and managed by appropriate medical professionals, such as a GP, psychiatrist or psychologist, and treatment may include medication and other evidence-based approaches. Hypnotherapy is not a treatment for ADHD and is not a replacement for that care. If you think you may have ADHD, or you are managing a diagnosis, your medical team is the right place for that. This work is a complement, focused on the stress and emotional load that can come alongside ADHD. Any decision about medication is between you and your doctor.

Living with ADHD can be genuinely tiring. Beyond the core experience of attention and focus, many people carry a second layer built up over years: the frustration of feeling you are not living up to your potential, the low self-esteem that comes from a lifetime of being told to try harder, the anxiety, the overwhelm, and the exhaustion of working twice as hard to keep up. That second layer is real, and it is often where the most day-to-day suffering sits. It is also the part this work can genuinely help with.

What this work can and cannot do

To be completely clear, because it matters: hypnotherapy does not change the underlying neurology of ADHD, does not replace medication or medical treatment, and is not a cure. Anyone promising to cure or overcome ADHD with hypnosis is overstating what it can do. What hypnotherapy and NLP can do is work with the emotional and stress-related patterns that often build up around ADHD, the parts that are learned responses rather than the condition itself. For many people, easing that layer makes a real difference to how they feel day to day, even though the ADHD is still there.

What it can help with, alongside your care

Used as a complement to medical care, this work can support:

●      Stress and anxiety that build up around the daily demands of living with ADHD

●      Low self-esteem and self-criticism, often from years of feeling not good enough

●      Confidence and a kinder relationship with yourself

●      Sleep and switching off, which many people with ADHD find difficult

●      The overwhelm and emotional intensity that can come with the territory

●      Motivation and follow-through on things that matter to you, worked with gently rather than forced

None of this is a claim to treat ADHD. It is support for the human being living with it, which is a different and legitimate thing.

How hypnotherapy and NLP approach it

A lot of the emotional weight around ADHD runs automatically: the harsh inner voice, the anxiety spikes, the sense of not measuring up, the stress that will not switch off. These are learned patterns, and they sit below conscious effort, which is why they are hard to think your way out of. In a relaxed, focused state, hypnotherapy works with those patterns, easing the self-criticism, calming the stress response, and building a steadier sense of your own worth. NLP adds practical tools for managing stress, working with motivation, and interrupting the negative spirals. The aim is not to change your ADHD, but to lighten what has built up around it, so you can meet it from a calmer, kinder place.

What happens in a session

The first session is a conversation about how ADHD affects your life, what is weighing on you most, and what you would like to feel differently, whether that is less self-criticism, calmer stress, better sleep or steadier confidence. From there the hypnotherapy is calm and comfortable, and you stay aware and in control throughout. The work is coordinated with, not instead of, your medical care, and we set realistic expectations together, with no claims to change the ADHD itself.

Working with Matthew has been a genuine turning point for me. After years of feeling like my ADHD was something I just had to fight through on my own, hypnotherapy helped me feel calmer, more focused, and less overwhelmed by everyday tasks. Matthew is patient, understanding, and really listens. I’d recommend him to any adult who’s been struggling to find strategies that actually stick.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy cure or treat ADHD?

No. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that should be diagnosed and managed by medical professionals, and hypnotherapy is not a treatment or cure for it. Be cautious of anyone who claims otherwise. What this work can do is support the stress, anxiety, self-esteem and sleep difficulties that often come alongside ADHD, as a complement to your medical care.

So what is the point of hypnotherapy if it does not treat ADHD?

Because a great deal of the day-to-day difficulty with ADHD comes from what builds up around it, years of self-criticism, anxiety, low confidence and stress. Those are learned patterns that hypnotherapy can genuinely help with, and easing them can make a real difference to how you feel, even though the ADHD itself remains.

Should I stop my ADHD medication if this helps?

No. Any decision about medication is between you and your doctor, and nothing in this work asks you to change it. Hypnotherapy sits alongside your medical treatment, not in place of it.

Do I need a diagnosis to do this work?

You do not need a diagnosis to work on stress, anxiety or self-esteem. But if you think you may have ADHD, seeing a GP or appropriate specialist for proper assessment matters, both for an accurate picture and because effective treatments exist. This work complements that, it does not replace assessment.

Will I lose control under hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is a state of focused, comfortable relaxation. You stay aware, you can speak, and you can stop at any time.

Can it help with the low self-esteem I have from years of struggling?

Yes, and this is often central. Many people with ADHD carry a deep sense of not being good enough from years of criticism and feeling behind. The work is well suited to easing that self-criticism and building a steadier, kinder sense of worth.

Can it help with focus or motivation directly?

It can gently support motivation and the stress and self-talk that get in the way of follow-through, but it does not claim to correct the attention differences of ADHD itself. That side is best addressed through your medical care and evidence-based strategies. Think of this as support for the emotional load, not a fix for the core symptoms.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with the person and what you are working on. Some come for a specific piece like self-criticism or sleep; others do broader work over a longer stretch. We set a realistic expectation together at the start, alongside your other care.

Can we do sessions online?

Yes. Sessions are available in person at the Evandale rooms or as online sessions across Australia and internationally, with research showing outcomes comparable to face-to-face work. Many people find the flexibility of online sessions easier to manage.
